Scotty McCreery Finds Perfect Balance With University and Pop Life

Scotty McCreery is a 19-year-old with a schedule more hectic than most. He’s currently balancing his attendance at North Carolina State University with a booming music career. “I have school Monday through Wednesday and we hit the touring circuit Thursday through Sunday,” says McCreery.

And if that wasn’t enough, the “American Idol” Season 10 winner recently told Billboard.com that he’s in the process of finishing-up a new album. “We’re in the studio right now,” he says, “and we’ve got about 12 songs cut.”

McCreery made history in October 2011 as his debut album, "Clear as Day," bowed at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart with 197,000 sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Of the new tunes is a track called “See You Tonight." McCreery teased his forthcoming release by performing the song April 11 on “American Idol.” “That’s the one I’m really excited about because I had a hand in writing it,” he explains. “That is one of those things I didn’t have a chance to do on the first record because coming off Idol as the winner, you have a deadline for the first record. We were on the Idol tour as well so we were trying to squeeze it all in."

Appearances on American Idol and the Academy of Country Music Awards helped multiple Idols this week. Weekly sales of Scotty McCreery's Clear as Day more than doubled after he returned to Idol, according to Nielsen SoundScan, and his new single, See You Tonight, debuted with 46,000 downloads. At the same time, Carrie Underwood'sBlown Away album sales jumped 43% from the previous week, and Kelly Clarkson saw big jumps in both album and track sales.

Scotty McCreery Helps Collect Peanut Butter for Food Banks

 
Scotty McCreery has teamed up with DoSomething.org and Walmart for the first-ever “Peanut Butter & Jam Slam” to collect one of the top requested food items at food banks, peanut butter. Scotty appears in a national Public Service Announcement encouraging teens to get started on their peanut butter and jam drives. He also shares his recipe for the “Scotty McCreery PB&J” – peanut butter, jam and the secret ingredient, cereal.
“Millions of kids experience hunger every day – but it just doesn’t have to be this way,“ Scotty said. “That’s why I am lending my voice to help motivate teens to collect jars of peanut butter and jelly to help fight hunger.”
The campaign, which launched on April 2 on “National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day” has the goal of collecting as much food as possible by the campaign deadline of May 14, 2013.
“Have you ever skipped a meal and went to bed hungry?” asked Saige Martina, Campaigns Associate for Poverty and Homelessness, at DoSomething.org. “Well, 17 million children in America don’t have a choice and experience hunger every day. Our mission is simple: teens will have six weeks to collect these two ingredients that will help feed families living in households that are food insecure.”
“We are proud to sponsor this campaign that will aid hunger relief efforts in America,” Scott Pope, senior manager, national media relations for corporate giving, Walmart, said. “Many children rely on school meals throughout the year, and a void is created during the spring and summer months when school is out. The Peanut Butter and Jam Slam will help provide access to food during this critical time period.”
To participate, teens sign up at DoSomething.org/PBJ to run a peanut butter and jelly drive and donate to their local food bank or collect and donate jars on their own. Once they’ve collected food, they are encouraged to send in photo proof of their collection showing how many jars of peanut butter and jam/jelly they collected and also, are they ‘team crunchy’ or ‘team smooth.’

Scotty McCreery returns to ‘American Idol’ to perform new single

With his new single released to radio and iTunes this week, Scotty McCreery will return to the show that made him famous to perform the song Thursday night.
McCreery, the Garner native who won the 10th season of “American Idol,” will sing “See You Tonight” on the results show, which airs at 8 p.m. Thursday on Fox.
McCreery wrote the song with Ashley Gorley and Zach Crowell. It ranked 47th on the iTunes singles charts Wednesday. It’s one of several songs on his upcoming album that he played a part in writing.
“I’ve been fortunate to be able to take my time making this record, and it’s been fun for me to have a hand in writing songs for the album, which I wasn’t able to do with ‘Clear As Day,’” McCreery said in a statement.
“Clear As Day,” his debut CD, was released within months of his “Idol” win in 2011. It went platinum, with more than a million copies sold. Last year, McCreery released a holiday album, “Christmas with Scotty McCreery,” which went gold.
A release date and name for the third album hasn’t been announced.
McCreery is a freshman at N.C. State University during the week and is traveling and performing on weekends with his “The Weekend Roadtrip Tour 2013.”

Kelly Clarkson and Scotty McCreery to Return to ‘American Idol’ This Week

 

Season 1 and Season 10 ‘American Idol‘ winners Kelly Clarkson and Scotty McCreery will perform on the stage where it all started once again. Thursday (April 11) is the results episode for the Top 6 of Season 12, and two of the show’s biggest and most successful winners will teach the last half-dozen hopefuls how it’s done.
First-ever ‘Idol’ Clarkson will perform her new single ‘People Like Us’ from her ‘Greatest Hits’ collection. It has not yet been confirmed which track McCreery — who took the crown during Season 10 in 2011 — will sing, but it’s likely to be his just-released new single, ‘See You Tonight.’
Both stars are considered favorites in country, with Clarkson slowly but surely crossing into a more permanent twang, while McCreery helped further solidify the genre’s legitimacy on reality singing shows.
McCreery and Clarkson’s ‘American Idol’ appearance airs at 8PM ET on your local Fox affiliate.

Scotty McCreery's new single 'See You Tonight' sounds shockingly contemporary

Last year’s American Idol winner Phillip Phillips gets a lot of credit for reinvigorating the Idol crown’s significance, but people seem to forget that his predecessor, Scotty McCreery, has had a pretty darn impressive post-Idol career himself.
McCreery’s debut album Clear As Day sold 1.2 million copies and spawned two country hits, “I Love You This Big” and “The Trouble With Girls.” Today, an Amazon listing confirmed what many have recently speculated — that McCreery is about to unleash new music into the world. The deep-voiced country crooner, who’s currently enrolled at North Carolina State University, will release “See You Tonight” on April 9, and it’s safe to assume he’ll perform the song when he visits the American Idol results show two days later.

There’s no official audio for the song yet, but country expert Windmills of MJsBigBlog shared the video below (with great audio) from a recent concert of McCreery singing “See You Tonight.”

My snap judgment? This is by far the best thing he’s ever put out. While much of Clear As Day felt dull and antiquated, both lyrically and musically, “See You Tonight” feels fresh, youthful, romantic, and perfect for the warm summer nights ahead. McCreery’s baritone laces the moonlit lyrics convincingly — especially that “Baby, it’s worth the drive/you’re worth the drive” lyric, which will have a lot of his female fans swooning. The song actually reminds me a bit of Eric Church’s “Springsteen,” another romantic, torchy midtempo number. Give it a listen below:

Scotty McCreery to Release ‘Christmas With Scotty McCreery’ on October 16

Breakout country star Scotty McCreery is preparing to release his first Christmas album. The aptly-titled ‘Christmas With Scotty McCreery’ is set to drop on Oct. 16, and the young singer says he is excited about the project, which mixes holiday classics with two new tracks.

“Christmas has always been my favorite time of the year,” McCreery says in a press release. “And what is Christmas without music? We start listening to Christmas songs early in the McCreery household, so it felt right. I’ve always wanted to record a Christmas album since I’ve had my music career.”

McCreery’s upcoming album — which he began work on back in July — features plenty of standards like ‘The First Noel,’ ‘Winter Wonderland,’ ‘Let it Snow’ and ‘Jingle Bells.’ It also includes ‘O Holy Night,’ which the singer performed in a school play in the fifth grade, and ‘Mary, Did You Know?’ McCreery used to perform the latter song in church services with a friend before rising to fame as a vocalist.

The album also includes a nod to Elvis with ‘Santa Claus is Back in Town,’ as well as two original songs. McCreery decided to include ‘Christmas in Heaven’ after hearing just one verse of the demo, and he says that song and ‘Christmas Is Coming Around’ really helped him create the mood he wanted for the record. “I just wanted it to be holly and jolly and really lift people’s spirits in the Christmas season, because it’s supposed to be a really happy time,” he observes. “But I also wanted to get across the real reason for the season. ‘Christmas in Heaven’ is my favorite song on the album and it really speaks to that.”

The ‘American Idol’ veteran promises the album will hold some musical surprises for his fans, too. “There will be some songs that sound like a different Scotty – not different as far as not country, but a different sound than they heard on the first album. Hopefully, they will be pleasantly surprised.”

To promote the upcoming release, McCreery’s official web site is offering fans the chance to pre-order an autographed copy of the CD and enter to win one of 100 random phone calls from the singer, as well as opportunities to receive a video greeting from him or attend a meet and greet session.
